One dead, two children critical after Fountain County crash
STAFF REPORTS
COVINGTON — Police suspect that alcohol and drug use were
factors in a two-vehicle, head-on crash late Monday that killed one man and
injured six others.
Ardee Spurlock Jr., 26, of Nicholasville, Ky., was pronounced
dead at the scene of the wreck on U.S. 136, just west of the Wabash River in
Fountain County.
Two children — Payton Wireman, 7, and Adrian Amos, 11, both
of Danville, Ill. — in the vehicle that Spurlock hit are listed in critical
condition this morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Both children
suffered skull fractures.
Spurlock was driving westbound in a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier
that is believed to have crossed the center line shortly before 9 p.m. and
struck a 1997 Mercury Tracer, according to the Indiana State Police.
The driver of the Mercury, Charla Lawrence, 28, of Westville,
Ill., was taken to Carle Hospital in Champaign, Ill., with a broken leg and
contusions.
Here's the status of her other passengers:
• Alex Amos, 32, of Danville, Ill., was taken to Carle
Hospital with a broken leg and chest pain.
• Jessie Amos, 9, of Danville, Ill., was taken to St. Vincent
Williamsport Hospital with minor injuries.
• Emily Wireman 9, of Danville, Ill., was taken to Carle
Hospital in with broken wrist and cuts.
Sgt. Kim Riley said this morning that investigators are
waiting to get test results back to determine whether Spurlock was intoxicated
at the time.
He declined to specify why alcohol and drugs are believed to
be factors, explaining, "It's from the officer's initial observation of what's
going on with the case."
Police also are trying to determine whether everyone in the
Mercury had been properly restrained.
