A RESOLUTION
urging the Transportation Cabinet to name a bridge in Harlan County in honor and
recognition of Ms. Elzie Spurlock.
We
pause to humbly honor a native daughter of the Appalachians, the gentle and
esteemed lady, Ms. Elzie Spurlock.
WHEREAS,
Eliza Spurlock was born on January 16, 1901, at Turtle Creek near Lenarue in
Harlan County; and
WHEREAS,
Eliza Spurlock graduated from the Harlan Presbyterian School in 1916 and began a
two year teaching career at the school; and
WHEREAS,
in 1917 Eliza Spurlock married Dewitt Spurlock and became the devoted wife of a
coal miner and the loving mother of eight children, three of whom were lost as
children; and
WHEREAS,
Eliza Spurlock has attended the Cawood Presbyterian Church most of her life and
its teachings have been the foundation upon which she has based her life's
decisions; and
WHEREAS,
in honor of her one hundredth birthday last month, Elzie Spurlock's birthday
celebration was held in the Cawood Presbyterian Church, a house of worship where
this quiet but strong woman served for many years as both church trustee and
Secretary of the Women's Mission Society; and
WHEREAS,
Eliza Spurlock has been a role model for generations of young people, touching
them with her soft and generous spirit as she emphasized the importance of
education in their lives; and
WHEREAS,
Eliza Spurlock's children feel that the following quote by Winston Churchill
best describes their mother: "You make a living by what you get, but you
make a life by what you live;" and
WHEREAS,
Eliza Spurlock has lived a life that has been an inspiration to every soul she
has encountered in her century on this earth;
NOW,
THEREFORE,
Be it resolved
by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky:
Section
1. The members of the House of Representatives, both individually
and collectively, proudly recognize Elzie Spurlock as an outstanding citizen and
exemplary representative of the Commonwealth.
Section
2. In honor of Elzie Spurlock's immeasurable contributions to the
citizens of the Commonwealth, the Transportation Cabinet is urged to name the
bridge in Harlan County located on United States Route 421 in the community of
Cawood over Crummies Creek "The Eliza Spurlock Bridge."
Section
3. The Transportation Cabinet is urged, within thirty (30) days of
the effective date of this Resolution, to erect signs at each approach to the
bridge in Harlan County located on United States Route 421 in the community of
Cawood over Crummies Creek that read "The Eliza Spurlock Bridge."
