HARLAN COUNTY MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF OUTSIDE HOSPITAL
A 42-year-old Harlan County man fatally shot himself Tuesday outside Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
A witness told authorities that Doug E. Brewer of Tremont went to an outside door of the wing that houses the hospital's psychiatric unit. A nurse opened the door, which is kept locked, to admit Mr. Brewer. He then pulled a gun and shot himself in the head, Harlan County Coroner Philip Bianchi said.
Mr. Brewer, who had a history of depression, was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner said. The shooting occurred between 7 and 8 p.m.
Mr. Brewer had been a maintenance worker at James Coal Co. in Leslie County. He was the son of Wilse Brewer and stepson of Etta Brewer of Fresh Meadows.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Little Creek Pentecostal Church of God in Cawood. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rich Funeral Home in Harlan.
